Appendectomy is mainly of two types of open appendectomy and laparoscopic appendectomy. Which type of appendectomy is to be performed is dependent on numerous factors. Similar to any surgery performed on the patient both this method also do have some risks on the patient

Open appendectomy- In this process, the incision in the lower right side of the abdominal cavity is made by the surgeon in order to remove the appendix, if the appendix of the patient is already ruptured then along with it removal its cleaning is also necessary which can be done effectively by employing this method only. Cleaning is necessary as the rupturing of the appendix releases unhealthy and harmful bacteria. Finally at the end wound is stitched again.

This method is preferred when:-

The appendix is already ruptured and cleaning of the abdominal area is necessary in order to remove the harmful bacteria.

The visibility is too poor to carry laparoscopic appendectomy.

The patient already had one abdominal surgery in the past.

The risk associated with this method are:-

Infection.

Formation of dense scars on the tissue (especially if one abdominal surgery was already done in the past).

Post-operative adhesion.

Bleeding problem.

Laparoscopic appendectomy- In this method, three small incisions of size less than about half an inch is made in order to insert a small narrow tube called cannula inside the abdominal cavity. The cannula fills the abdomen with carbon dioxide gas due to which our abdomen stretches. This process is similar to filling the balloon with air. This gas improves the visibility of a surgeon which is necessary for carrying out the surgery.

After this, the next step involves the insertion of equipment which plays the most important role in carrying out the surgery. It consists of a long, thin, cylindrical tube-like structure. One high resolution camera is placed in front along with the high intensity light beam which helps the surgeon to have a clear view of abdomen interior on a display screen and helps in guiding the instrument to appendix by following all the above mentioned procedures and techniques the appendix is removed through this process once it is found out by the surgeon.

This method is most advisable as it can remove any unruptured appendix or can help to work out effectively for those patients who are not at very high risk of rupturing of the appendix which may occur while the performance of this surgery. The effectiveness of this method is mainly dependent on the visibility achieved by the surgeon which becomes poor when the appendix is ruptured and then employing this method for such cases becomes difficult.

This method is preferred for non-ruptured appendix because:-

It offers quick recovery.
Stay time in the hospital becomes short.
Postoperative pain is comparatively less.
Most suitable for aged people.
The risk associated with this method are:-
Leakage might occur at the edge of colon
Injury to adjacent organs like uterus, small intestine might take place.

Note:  the above two risks are present in the case of open appendectomy also.
