Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan died of colon infection on Wednesday, since then everyone is talking about this disease and want to know about this disease. Today we will tell you what is a colon infection and its symptoms and the treatment.

What is the colon

The colon is the long, coiled, tubelike organ that removes water from digested food. The remaining material, solid waste called feces, goes from the colon to the rectum and leaves the body through the anus. It is also known as the large intestine.

What Is a Colon Infection?

Colon infection is also known as colitis. There is a problem with colon infection ie rectal infection. In common language, the infection in the colon is due to taking such food, which our digestive system has to work very hard to digest. In such a situation, the food which is not well digested in our body starts accumulating in our colon. In such a situation, during the process of digesting such food, the chemical elements that are formed in the digestive system also get deposited in different forms in the colon and start damaging it. When the condition becomes more severe, mucus or phlegm accumulates in the colon, and problems during bowel movements begin to increase.

Cause of Colon Infection

Colon infection can happen due to many reasons, such as - This infection can be caused by the use of contaminated water, not being able to take care of cleanliness, and sometimes due to bad eating. Colitis can be said to be caused by viruses, bacteria, parasites, contaminated water, food-borne diseases, or poor hygiene.

There are many other conditions that can cause colon inflammation such as:

Infection: Colitis infection can be caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites. Colitis infection can result from contaminated water, foodborne illnesses, or poor hygiene.

Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome (IBD): IBD is a group of chronic disease that causes inflammation of the digestive system. Two main types of IBD - Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

Ischemic Colitis: When blood flow to a part of the colon decreases, it can cause ischemic colitis.

Allergic reactionAllergic colitis occurs in infants more than adults. This disease affects about two-three percent of infants.

Microscopic ColitisMicroscopic colitis is caused by an increase in lymphocytes. This colitis can only be seen through a microscope.

Drug-Induced ColitisSome anti-inflammatory medicines also cause inflammation in the colon. A medicine called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is for this condition. NSAIDs have been used for a long time in old age or in many people, due to which there is a risk of drug-induced colitis.

Symptoms of Colon Infection:

As discussed above, there are different types of colitis and their symptoms are different, but some common symptoms are:

  • fever

  • Diarrhea- with or without blood

  • Nausea

  • Abdominal pain and cramps

  • Weight loss

  • Fatigue

  • swelling

  • Frequent bowel movements

  • depression

  • Joint pain and pain

  • Loss of appetite or loss of appetite

  • Inflammation of the colon tissue

  • Jerking belly

Diagnosis of Colitis:

Your doctor will diagnose colon infection after knowing the possible reasons based on your symptoms. You may have to undergo one or more of the following tests to confirm the diagnosis of colitis:

Blood Test - The doctor may ask you for a blood test. This can be done to check for anemia by checking if your tissues have enough red blood cells to carry enough oxygen or to check for signs of infection.

Stool Test - White blood cells in your stool may indicate colitis. Sample of the stool can be helpful in dealing with infections caused by bacterial viruses and parasites.

Colonoscopy - In this test, the doctor looks at your entire colon using a thin, flexible, light tube with an attached camera.  During this procedure, the doctor may also take small samples of biopsy for laboratory analysis. Sometimes a tissue sample can be helpful in confirming the diagnosis.

Flexible Sigmoidoscopy - In this examination, Dr. uses a thin, flexible, light tube to examine the rectum and sign of the last part of the patient's colon. If the patient has severe swelling in the colon, the doctor may perform this test instead of a complete colonoscopy.

X-ray - If the patient shows severe symptoms, the doctor may perform a standard X-ray of the patient's abdominal area to control for serious complications such as a perforated colon.

CT scan - If the doctor feels that there are some complications in colitis, he may ask for a city scan of the patient's abdomen or pelvis. A CT scan can reveal how much inflammation is in the colon.

Computerized tomography (CT) enterography and magnetic resonance (MR) enterography - If the doctor wants to exclude any inflammation in the small intestine, he would recommend any of these non-intrusive tests. These tests are more sensitive to check inflammation in the intestines than conventional imaging tests.

Treatment of Colon Infection

If we talk about treatment, it depends on what type of colitis has occurred. If it is due to an allergy due to some food or medicine, then your doctor may refuse to take that food and medicine for it. In many ways, colitis is cured by changes in medicines and diet. To cure this, treatment is first done for the swelling of the stomach, which is causing it.

Medication

Anti-inflammatory drugs, antibiotics, supplements, and lifestyle changes can be made to treat this.

Surgery may be recommended if there is no relief after other treatments or if there is severe damage to your colon.

Therefore, we can say that colon infection or colitis can be of different types depending on the type and severity. Colorectal cancer can also develop with the duration of the disease. The person can catch the infection easily and sometimes this infection also becomes life-threatening.
