Venography is a type of x-ray that employs a contrast material injection to show how blood flows through your veins. It may be used by your doctor to detect blood clots, select a vein for use in a bypass or dialysis technique, or check varicose veins prior to surgery.

What is the procedure for venography?

  • This test will most likely be performed as an outpatient procedure by your doctor.
  • Venography can be done in the x-ray department or in an interventional radiology suite (also known as a special procedures suite).
  • You'll be lying down on an x-ray table. The table may be in a standing position depending on the body component being examined (e.g., the legs). You will be fastened with safety straps if the table is relocated during the treatment.
  • To inject the contrast agent, the physician will use a needle or catheter to enter a vein. The location of the needle is determined by the part of your body where the veins are being examined. Several x-rays are taken as the contrast material travels through the veins being investigated. You might be moved around to allow the x-rays to obtain photographs of your veins from different angles.

Venography can be performed in a variety of ways:

  • Ascending Venography detects a DVT and determines where it is located in your vein.
  • Descending venography examines the condition of your deep vein valves.
  • Venography of the upper extremities examines your neck and armpits for blockages, blood clots, or other vascular disorders.
  • Venacavography is a procedure that examines the inferior or superior vena cava.

What is the purpose of venography?

Venography is performed to confirm a DVT diagnosis.

It can also be used to determine whether a vein problem is caused by a blood clot or another type of blockage.

It can be used to check for congenital venous issues or to locate a vein for bypass graft surgery.

It could be utilised to figure out what's causing leg swelling or pain.

It can also be utilised to determine the origin of a blood clot that has gone to the lungs (pulmonary embolism).
