What are the uses of DJ STENTS?

DJ stents are implanted for a smooth passage of stone through the ureter. It is due to the following reasons DJ stents are used.

Stones of size small to medium size from  7mm to 12mm can pass easily through the dilated stent.

It is used as an apparatus for breaking stones in the renal pelvis, upper and middle calyx.

It acts as a precautionary measure during retroperitoneal surgeries like surgery done for cancer of the uterus.

Ureters are kept suspended during the treatment of retroperitoneal fibrosis to prevent kidney failure.

As the fragments of stone break down in the ureter the DJ stent prevents stricture formation.

The broken pieces of stone get lined up in the DJ stent, prevents blocking in the ureter and forming a path for stones to flush out into the bladder.

Any pus or infection formed in the kidney gets drained out into the bladder via a ureter by means of a DJ stent.

How is DJ STENTING done in a patient?

Patients who require DJ STENTING are given general anaesthesia prior to its insertion. Your doctor may ask you to stop blood thinners before the procedure. A cystoscope is used for the procedure. The bladder is inspected and the ureteric opening is located through the cystoscope. X-ray images are used to evaluate or observe obstruction in the urinary tract. A guidewire is passed into the kidney initially and then a DJ stent is pushed over the guidewire to it from the kidney to the urinary bladder

DJ stents are extensively used for more than 25 years. Once it is placed to remove stones from the body, the patient should drink plenty of water so all broken fragments pass down from the ureter.

DJ stents are made from nickel, mixed alloys like superalloy titanium, stainless steel and chromium cobalt. The stent is kept in the urinary tract till it drains out the fragments of stone, later it is removed within a few weeks. A patient might experience mild to moderate pain in the lower abdomen with a strong urge to urinate. Medication is prescribed to treat these symptoms caused due to stents placed in the body. A patient is instructed to drink fluids, water up to 1.5 litres daily and eat more vegetables.

How is DJ STENT removed?

A doctor will advise the patient for follow up visits post-surgery to decide the time for removal of the stent. Stents are removed in two different ways. A string is attached at the end of the stent. This string is placed in a manner that it can be felt outside the urethra. The string can be used to pull the stent and remove it.

One more method of removal of the stent is through the cystoscope. A small camera called the cystoscope is inserted into the urethra. A medication that makes the area numb is administered to the patient. The cystoscope is inserted into the bladder with a grasping instrument that grasps the stent and removes it.

The conventional method of treating kidney stones through shockwave lithotripsy by using DJ stent is an advanced technique done globally in multispeciality hospitals. It has revolutionized the approach in treating huge stones, giving a solution to drain the large size stones from the body.

A heavy cost is incurred by  kidney hospitals and multispecialty hospitals. A multifaceted, multidisciplinary perspective to every case of kidney stones through surgical treatment procedure using DJ stent, helps towards achieving a cure.
