While the Spica Cast is not a surgical procedure in and of itself, it is frequently used in conjunction with a surgical procedure for hip dysplasia. This is due to the fact that the hip joint must be kept in the new, surgically repaired hip joint position in order for the hip joint to mature properly. Double hip spica is one of the different types of spica cast.
What is a hip spica cast, exactly?
A hip spica is a plaster cast that runs from the chest to the feet and is put under general anaesthesia in the operating room. The trunk of the body and one or both legs are included in a hip spica. A single hip spica is one that covers only one leg to the ankle or foot, whereas a double hip spica covers both legs.
In newborns and toddlers, it treats hip dysplasia and other problems. Hip casts are rarely used by adults. Hip dysplasia in adults can be treated with surgery.
When should you use the double hip cast?
The double hip spica cast keeps your child's hip or shattered bone immobilised. It will heal in the proper place this way. Spica casts come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some extend from the chest to one leg's knee or foot. Others go from your child's chest to his or her knees, or both knees. Some contain bars between the legs to help your child's hips and legs stay stable. It all relies on the health of your youngster.
The double hip spica cast should be cared for as follows:
